French Toast holds a very special place in my heart. As a child, I’ve always begged my dad to make this dish for dinner (the German version of French Toast doesn’t include sugar). To this day, I still love to make it for Sunday brunch or as an afternoon treat.
The version I’m introducing today features one of my all-time favorite Korean ingredients: Mugwort Powder, called 쑥가루 (Ssuk Garu) in Korean.
What is Mugwort Powder?
Mugwort powder is green in color, similar to Matcha Powder. The taste, however, is very unique and different from green tea. It has a grassy and somewhat minty flavor, which can be very refreshing in lattes, desserts, or even soups. Mugwort Lattes are actually my favorite thing to order at Korean cafes (and to make at home).
The mugwort powder I used in this recipe is a premium-grade one from Soocha Tea. Their mugwort powder is hand-picked from Mountain Jiri in Korea. (This is not sponsored btw, I just really love Soo’s products).
Of course, you don’t have to buy premium-grade mugwort powder to enjoy this recipe. You should find mugwort powder for 2-4 dollars in every Korean supermarket or online. The Korean term for Mugwort Powder is 쑥가루 (Ssuk Garu).
Tip: If you don’t have access to mugwort powder, matcha powder is a great substitute!
I served the toast with whipped cream, strawberries, crushed walnuts, and syrup. Even though I recommend serving your french toast this way (it’s really darn delicious), these ingredients are totally optional. Feel free to use whatever garnish you prefer!
Here is my Mugwort Powder French Toast recipe. I hope you’ll love it!
