Kkomak Bibimbap is a dish that has been trending in Korea a few years ago. Ever since I tried it in seafood restaurants in Korea, I tried to recreate it at home. Today, I’m excited to share my quick and easy recipe for Kkomak Bibimbap with you. Make yourself a bowl of this delicious and healthy mixed rice in only 10 minutes!
What does Kkomak mean?
Kkomak (꼬막) is the Korean word for blood cockle. These saltwater clams are in-season in winter in Korea, making Kkomak Bibimbap a popular winter dish. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to fresh blood cockles. Kkomak are also available canned in Korea and exported across the world. Many Korean grocery stores carry them. Just look out for cans titled “순살왕꼬막”. I highly recommend using canned cockles for this recipe, if you can get your hands on some! It saves a lot of time and makes this dish more accessible to cooking beginners, who might not be comfortable with cleaning and cooking fresh seafood, like cockles.
What is Bibimbap?
Bibimbap (비빔밥) literally translated means “mixed rice”. Bibim (비빔) means “mixing” and Bap (밥) refers to “cooked rice”. When most Non-Koreans hear Bibimbap, they probably picture the “fancy” version of Bibimbap: A bowl of steamed white rice with assorted fresh, marinated, and sautéed vegetables, topped with raw or seared meat and a fried egg or raw egg yolk. However, since Bibimbap translates to “mixed rice”, it can consist of as little as one topping that is being mixed with rice before eating. Kkomak Bibimbap is a good example of that.

Kkomak Bibimbap (Blood Cockle Bibimbap)
Ingredients
- 1 Can Blood cockles (꼬막)
- 1 Stalk Spring onions
- Microgreens (optional)
- Crushed seaweed/gim (optional)
- Glutinous short grain rice
Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (chili flakes)
- 1 Tbsp Sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp Sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp Minced garlic
- 0.5 Tbsp Water
Instructions
- Make one cup of rice. Keep warm and set aside.
- Drain cockles and add to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
- Add all ingredients listed under "Sauce" and mix thoroughly until well combined.
- In a medium-sized serving bowl, add the cooked rice and seasoned cockles. Top with seaweed flakes and microgreens. Mix rice and seasoned cockles well before eating.
